Mesothelioma (Asbestos Cancer) is a form of cancer that like most other forms of cancer has the best chance of cure with early detection. Knowing this everyone should be familiar with the basics of health care and disease prevention. A great deal of emphasis today is placed on the illness itself while very little on its prevention.
An annual physical for both men and women is critical. Women should have annual pap smears and should perform monthly breast exams. Men should perform monthly testicular exams. People are not generally comfortable with self examination but this regular practice saves lives. Maintaining a comprehensive health history for yourself and your loved ones helps you in taking care of them. If you become critically ill, they (the history) must become your voice and that could be the thin line between losing your life and saving it. Your doctor benefits because a comprehensive health history provides him with clues to help keep you healthy.
Remember, doctors are your partners in health care. They are not genies in a bottle. They need your help to beat diseases like Mesothelioma Cancer. As a close associate of a RN who has been practicing for 26 years I can tell you the number of lives seen saved by early detection. The converse is true as well and a large number of people are lost because individuals ignored early cancer warning signs and did not practice regular self examinations.
Mesothelioma Cancer is not generally diagnosed until the later stages because this is when the symptoms begin to present themselves. For those with a history of asbestos exposure annual or better yet biannual appointments with their health care providers should be a part of their health practices. Mesothelioma generally has a prolonged period of latency before the patient becomes gravely ill. Sometimes this latency period can be 20 or 30 years. It is essential to keep a health history that could yield insight for your doctor.
If you are having frequent colds and bouts of pneumonia and other viruses this is not normal and you should alert your doctor. Good health habits ensure that you are familiar with your body and provide helpful information to your doctor. You may be concerned about the cost of this health care given your situation. Most hospitals have a social worker who can help you navigate the clinics and services for the uninsured, underinsured or those who may qualify for Medicare or state medical subsidies. The key point here is the importance early detection in the care and treatment of Mesothelioma.
